3DGRIPS - Seismic protection in small scale

The 3DGRIPS project explores a novel approach to seismic protection for sensitive objects such as museum artefacts, medical equipment, and data/communication centers. These items are highly valuable and vulnerable during earthquakes—yet existing isolation systems are typically designed for much larger structures.

To address this gap, we are developing and testing a new type of seismic isolator based on a geared rocking/rolling inverse pendulum. This patented system aims to provide reliable, low-cost, and low-maintenance protection in all three dimensions, including the vertical component of motion. Through theoretical study, computational modeling, and physical experiments, the project seeks to validate and refine the concept, with the long-term goal of making such protection more accessible and adaptable.
